If someone asked you, “What makes your business special?”—would you have a clear, confident answer?
If you hesitated for even a second, don’t worry—you’re not alone. GrowthBox research shows that 60%+ of businesses have the same problem. Most small business owners struggle to define what sets them apart from others with similar products or services.
That’s where your ‘value proposition’ comes in. Think of it as your business “why you should choose us” statement. And in today’s noisy world, having a strong one makes all the difference. It acts as a guiding light for all your marketing, the products you offer, the experience you provide.
So, it’s important. The good news is that it doesn’t need to be a complicated process to nail it down.
This blog aims to break it down in a simple way so you can craft a clear, compelling message that helps you be more effective with your marketing to attract more customers.
⸻
Exactly what do we mean by a Value Proposition?
Your value proposition is not just a slogan or a catchy tagline.
It’s a clear, no-nonsense explanation of why customers should choose you over competitors.
Without one, your business risks blending into the background. But with a strong value proposition, you can:
✅ Make your business memorable
✅ Attract the right customers
✅ Clearly communicate why you’re the best choice
Standing out in the right way helps customers find their way to you. So how do you go about it?
⸻
To craft your value proposition, answer these three simple but powerful questions:
1️⃣ Who is my ideal customer?
The better you know your target audience, the stronger your message will be. Are you helping busy parents, local businesses, freelancers, fitness enthusiasts, etc?
Tip: Be specific! Instead of saying “anyone who needs marketing,” try “small business owners who struggle with online marketing.” For example. And keep in mind that ‘if you are marketing to everyone, you are marketing to no one’. Really nail down who your audience is.
⸻
2️⃣ What customer problem do I solve, and what value do I create?
Customers don’t buy products—they buy solutions to their problems. What pain points does your business solve?
✔️ A bakery might solve the problem of “finding fresh, organic, and gluten-free pastries.”
✔️ A dog-walking service might help busy professionals who don’t have time to walk their pets.
Avoid focusing just on features. Instead, talk about the outcome and benefit for the customer.
⸻
3️⃣ Why should customers choose me over others?
What makes you different and better? Maybe you offer:
⭐ Faster service
⭐ More personalised care
⭐ Affordable pricing
⭐ Unique expertise
Example: Instead of just saying “We do social media marketing,” try:
“We help small businesses grow online with easy-to-use marketing services, even if they have no experience or big budgets.”
⸻
Challenge: Explain your business in 30 seconds
If you had 30 seconds to convince a customer, what would you say?
Tip 1: Focus on the outcome your customers are looking for.
Tip 2: Add a “so what?” to make it clear why it matters.
Harder than it looks? If you’re struggling, try this formula:
“We help [target audience] solve [specific problem] by [unique solution], so they can [key benefit].”
⸻
Need a little inspiration? Here are some great examples (that we like) from others who have taken their value propositions to a very succinct level:
🔹 TruGreen → “A healthy outdoor living space made easy.”
🔹 Catalina Crunch → “Delicious snacks made healthy.”
🔹 Budget Car Rental → “Car rentals that fit your budget.”
See how simple yet powerful these are?
⸻
Remember, your value proposition isn’t just a slogan though. It should be the foundation of your marketing, the experience you provide to your customers, the way you might design your product or service or help you decide which feature to add that will help you add more value.
